Who are we?
The Zoning Board plays a critical role in shaping the city. It regulates the height, bulk and uses of property based on Stamford’s Zoning Regulations. The Zoning Board is appointed by the Mayor and comprises of five regular members and one alternate member. The Zoning Board members are volunteers. The current members are below:
What do we do?
The Zoning Board reviews applications for changes to the Zoning Map, Zoning Text, Special Exceptions, Site and Architectural Plans and Coastal Site Plans. The board conducts public hearings and administrative review of applications based on rules defined in the City Charter. The meetings are held in the cafeteria, 4th floor of the Government Center. Who do we work with?
The Zoning Board is advised by the Land Use Bureau planning staff on the various applications. Depending on the nature of the application, the board receives referral comments on the applications from various City departments, Commissions and agencies including the Zoning Enforcement Officer, Fire Marshall, Department of Health, Engineering Bureau, Transportation Bureau, Harbor Management Commission, Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, Office of Long Island Sound, Harbor Management Commission, Western Connecticut Council of Government, Board of Representatives and neighboring towns. The Zoning Board consults with the City’s Corporation Counsel on applications.
When should you talk to us?
You should contact the Land Use Bureau staff if you are interested in submitting an application to the Zoning Board for approval of a Site and Architectural Plan, Special Exception, Coastal Site Plan review or administrative review of a prior approval. You are encouraged to schedule a pre-application meeting where the Land Use Bureau staff who can provide guidance regarding the application requirements and the application review process.
