Veterans Day Parade Committee Announce Veteran Sergeant Ted Ogonek as the 2018 Grand Marshal

Mayor David Martin and the Veterans Day Parade Committee proudly announce that local veteran Sergeant Ted Ogonek will be the 2018 Grand Marshal.

Sgt. Ogonek is a lifelong resident of Stamford and the son of 1st generation polish immigrants.  He grew up on Selleck Street as the youngest of six children. He attended John J Ryle elementary, Cloonan Junior High School and then the Connecticut Trade School.

Sgt. Ogonek was drafted into the United States Army on March 7th 1944. Ted enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was processed through Ft. Devens MA. He landed at Hobbs Army airfield to learn how to be an aircraft mechanic, working on B-17 Flying Fortresses.  From there, he received order after order to travel across the country and work on various different airplanes, including B-24 Liberators and B-29 Super Fortresses.

After Japan surrendered, he was transferred to Germany as part of the occupying forces.  He was stationed at Kaufburen as part of the 55th Fighter group of the 8th Air Force to work on P-51 Mustangs.  He was also part of offloading, assembling and maintaining the first U.S. jet fighter plane in Germany, the P-80 Shooting Star. This work proved to generals that he was worthy to be promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant in a matter of weeks.

When he returned to Stamford, he first found it hard to find a job. He ultimately found work at Stamford Tool and Die for 25 years, working on, among other things, optical system parts for the Apollo missions and U.S. spy planes. He eventually joined Perkin Elmer, where he worked to become a manager/supervisor for integrated circuit production. Ted still lives in Stamford to this day and is very proud of his military career.
