The Transportation, Traffic & Parking Department invites interested members of the public to a virtual public meeting to discuss the Safe Routes to School Project. The project will enhance and expand existing sidewalks and associated infrastructure (crosswalks, signage, etc.) within one mile of the above-listed schools. This project addresses the barriers which prevent students from walking to school, while also improving safety and mobility for all pedestrians. The project areas are summarized in the table below.

This project will utilize a combination of Federal and local funds including approximate $3.68 Million in federal aid that was awarded to the City through the Transportation Alternative (TA) Safe Routes to Schools Program under Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) / Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The TA funds will be utilized for the sidewalk installation on Stillwater Road and Cold Spring Road. Detailed design elements for Scofieldtown Road will be further reviewed to determine the opportunities and challenges for sidewalk installation and future funding applications.

The Department has completed the Preliminary Design of State Project 135-356. It is the City’s and State’s policy to keep communities informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development.

Interested members of the community are welcome to attend to learn more about the project and ask questions to the project team. The virtual meeting will be held via Microsoft TEAMS on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 6:00pm.

For interested parties that are otherwise unable to attend the public meeting, the presentation, the preliminary design plans, and the recording of the virtual meeting can be accessed on the Transportation, Traffic and Parking project website the day after the public meeting at https://www.stamfordct.gov/government/operations/transportation-traffic-parking/projects.

Background

The City of Stamford has been awarded an initial $3.7 million in federal funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives program. The project will provide safe routes for students to walk to schools by enhancing sidewalks and sidewalk infrastructure within one mile of schools. Schools in Stamford will be more accessible by foot when direct, safe, and comfortable facilities for students are installed.
