Background

The block of Bedford Street between Broad Street and Forest Street functions as Stamford’s “Main Street” with a rich history of retail, restaurant and bar activity, and residential usage. This history continues today with Bedford Street being the main downtown restaurant, bar, and retail corridor. Additionally, Bedford Street is home to several special events such as Arts and Crafts on Bedford, Brews on Bedford, Bark in the Park, and several others. With this success and significant activity, several challenges have emerged which this project seeks to address.

Goals

The Reimagine Bedford Street Project seeks to create a vision for the redevelopment of the public realm on Bedford Street between Broad Street and Forest Street in Stamford. Recommendations will be short, medium, and long term in nature ranging from programmatic recommendations, policy and regulation changes, and construction recommendations. The Project will be led by the Transportation, Traffic & Parking Department (TTP) and the Stamford Downtown Special Services District (Stamford Downtown).

The final report will consist of a Public Realm Vision Plan document that includes written and physical design recommendations for the future of Bedford Street.

Timeline

In June and July 2025, the project team will be focusing on public outreach and engagement. We want to learn more and understand how you use Bedford Street.

In late summer, early fall 2025, the team will develop project renderings for what Bedford Street can look like in the future. The future condition will be short, medium, and long term in nature and will address the following focus areas:

Public space activation
Physical design and amenity enhancements
Short-term and delivery parking and retail supportive parking options
Bicycle parking
Making outdoor dining permanent
Street safety
