Greenwich-Stamford Multi-Use Trail

Background

The City of Stamford has partnered with the Town of Greenwich on the planning and design of a multi-use trail between Boccuzzi Park in Stamford and Binney Park in Old Greenwich.

The Town of Greenwich received a Recreational Trails Grant from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection for this project. Greenwich is the primary project lead on the project.

There is no construction as part of this project at this time. The project consists only of planning and design of the multi-use path.

Goals

This project is meant to enhancing walking and biking connections between the two municipalities, to parks, and to other points of interest.

The consultant team at Tighe & Bond have developed an interactive StoryMap that presents multiple potential route alternatives for the Greenwich-Stamford Multi-Use Path. The StoryMap includes maps, conceptual renderings, and descriptions of possible improvements for each option, as well as a comment form for public feedback. Impact

Timeline

Q1 2025: Finalize contract negotiations and begin planning, feasibility, and concept development phases.
Summer/Fall 2025 (in progress): Conduct feasibility studies and develop conceptual designs for four route alternatives. These are expected to take approximately six months, concluding in late summer or early fall.
December 4, 2025: Host a public information meeting to present the feasibility study results and gather community feedback to select the preferred route.
2026: Complete preliminary and final designs for the selected route. This phase is expected to take six to nine months.

Project Cost

The feasibility and design phase of this project is funded through the Connecticut Recreational Trails Program grant, which funds up to 80% of total costs and requires a 20% match from the Town of Greenwich and City of Stamford. The budgeted cost is $338,000 for which the municipalities secured a $270,000 grant from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). Construction is not funded or planned at this time.
