Glenbrook and Church Intersection Improvements

Background

First identified in the 2015 Glenbrook/Springdale TOD Feasibility Study, the reconstruction of
the intersection of Glenbrook Road and Church Street will re-align this unique intersection,
replace out of date and antiquated signal infrastructure, improve pedestrian safety, and support
enhanced traffic operations.

The intersection of Glenbrook Road and Church Street is a neighborhood focal point; however,
it currently suffers from wide corner radii (encouraging high vehicle speeds), lack of crosswalks,
and other geometric factors that combined reduce pedestrian and bicyclist safety and mobility.
Being adjacent to the Glenbrook Train Station, this location does have a high volume of people
walking through it to access the train. Furthermore, the intersection acts as the northern node for the
Glenbrook Road commercial area and connects directly to the Hope Street commercial area,
uniting these two highly walkable commercial corridors.

Goals

The project will re-align the intersection of Kirkham Place (subsequently creating a new community green
space which will improve storm water retention), add a crosswalk on the east side of the intersection,
shorten crossing distances with corner bump outs, square-up crosswalks, and normalize the intersection
by improving the overall alignment of the intersecting roadways. Furthermore, the existing bike lanes on
Church Street will be continued to the train station. Additionally, there are several sidewalk and
streetscape components associated with this project including rebuilding existing substandard sidewalks
and filling in sidewalk gaps to improve the overall pedestrian experience. The project will also replace the existing aging traffic signal.
