Creating a cleaner, greener Stamford

foodwaste_logo_color

Our goal is to reduce the amount of garbage going into landfills by diverting food waste. This food waste gets turned into compost that is used in our community!

How to get started

  1. Pick up your FREE compost kit at any one of the following locations:
    • Stamford Government Center (Cashier’s Office)
      • 888 Washington Boulevard
      • 8:30 am – 4 pm | Monday – Friday
    • Stamford Scale House (near Katrina Mygatt)
      • 101 Harbor View Avenue
      • 6 am – 2 pm | Monday – Saturday
    • The compost kit includes:
      • A small, 1-gallon bin for your countertop, wide enough to easily scrap your plate
      • A larger, 6-gallon transport bin that locks for easy storage and transport

  2. Collect food waste in your small bin.

  3. Once your small bin is full, empty it into the larger bin.
    • Food scraps can be frozen for convenience.
    • We recommend keeping food waste bins inside (in the house or garage).
    • If you choose to line your bins:
      • You may use compostable bags, which can be purchased online.
      • DO NOT KNOT the bag to close it.

  4. Empty your storage bin at the Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center or Fairgate Farm as often as needed.
