What is the Sustainability Scorecard?

The Sustainability Scorecard is a City of Stamford Land Use Bureau program that assesses, and rewards achievements and best practices developers utilize in creating sustainable housing and commercial spaces. It is the hope of the City that this scorecard serves as a reminder of the cumulative impacts of individual sustainable choices for not just new developments but existing buildings as well.

This Scorecard is a critical tool in the execution of the City’s sustainability priorities. Through a multidisciplinary and research-informed approach, the Scorecard integrates widely recognized best practices for sustainability standards into a Stamford-specific framework.

Who is required to Complete a Sustainability Scorecard?

 The Stamford Sustainability Scorecard is a requirement for all larger development projects in Stamford per Section 9.F of the Stamford Zoning Regulations. This includes all new developments, redevelopments or conversions that include:

  • New construction and substantial renovations with 10 or more housing units or 10,000 sf in floor area

  • Projects on sites where 20,000 sf or more in area is disturbed

The goals of the Stamford Sustainability Scorecard are to encourage sustainable land use and development standards by:

  • providing residents, employees, and consumers with building-level information related to sustainability; and providing the development community with guidelines on best practices;

  • tracking sustainable aspects of buildings and development in Stamford;

  • improving community awareness of sustainability and resiliency issues in the built environment; and

  • improving the quality of life for all Stamford residents.

How are Projects Scored?

Development projects are graded based on their sustainability score from A+ (very sustainable) to NR (not rated, less stainable). Points are awarded differently based on the type of development and whether the project is a new construction or renovation of an existing building.

Each Category has multiple subcategories (“Elements”) for which points can be achieved. Elements in the Building Health and Energy Use categories are weighed more heavily in a project’s total score given its relative contribution to a project’s total emissions. To see the detailed breakdown of points for each element refer to the Scorecard Manual
