Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

Mayor Simmons released the following statement on the passing of Stamford Board of Education Member, Nicola Tarzia: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Nicola Tarzia. As a lifelong Stamford resident, small business owner, and community leader, Nic spent so much of his life giving back to the city he loved. From his years of service on the Stamford Board of Education, to his advocacy for countless community causes through the Tarzia Foundation and organizations like Dollars for Scholars and Toys for Tots, Nic was committed to creating opportunities for Stamford’s children and families. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him, and his impact on the Stamford community will not be forgotten. I extend my condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time”.

MAYOR’S UPDATES

Westhill High School Groundbreaking: On Wednesday, I joined local and state leaders, including Lt. Governor Bysiewicz and Department of Administrative Services Deputy Commissioner Eleanor Michael, for the groundbreaking of the new Westhill High School! This is an exciting milestone for Stamford students, families, and educators. Designed to accommodate up to 2,458 students, the new Westhill High School will feature nearly 100 classrooms, including general education, science, special education, and specialized learning spaces designed to support the school’s many career pathway programs, as well as a state-of-the-art indoor pool. Mayor Caroline Simmons at the Westhill Groundbreaking

Seastreak to Citi Field: On Saturday, we celebrated the launch of the Seastreak ferry, with service to and from Stamford to Citi Field. The service will operate for 24 games across select weekends this Mets season. A big thank you to the New York Mets, Seastreak, the Village, and our Economic Development team for their work and partnership in bringing this service to our city.
Pride Month: I was honored to officially proclaim the month of June as Pride Month in the City of Stamford and to raise the Pride flag at Government Center. This is an important opportunity to honor and celebrate the generations of LGBTQ+ individuals who have advocated for a more inclusive, equal society. Our administration remains fully committed to ensuring Stamford is a welcoming and inclusive city for all residents. Beach Permits: Beach permits are now available for purchase online, by mail, or in person at the Cashiering and Permitting Department. Residents are encouraged to buy their permits early rather than wait until beach season! Permits are required beginning on May 1st through September 30th. Click here to purchase.

Eversource Cable Modernization Project: Eversource has started construction to replace two of its underground cables from 1968. To learn more and sign up for construction updates visit here.
Old Long Ridge Road Bridge: After a visual inspection of the Old Long Ridge Road Bridge, just south of Hunting Ridge Road, city engineers have implemented a temporary one-way traffic pattern, effective immediately. The City will share further updates as they become available.
Mill Road Bridge: The Mill Road bridge near Old Long Ridge Road is open to one lane vehicular traffic. Residents can click here for updates.
