STATEMENT FROM MAYOR CAROLINE SIMMONS AND STAMFORD POLICE CHIEF TIMOTHY SHAW ON RECENT ICE ACTIVITY IN STAMFORD

STAMFORD, CT – Today, Mayor Caroline Simmons and Stamford Police Chief Timothy Shaw released the following statement regarding recent ICE activity in the City of Stamford:

“In recent weeks, the City of Stamford has experienced an increase in ICE activity, including arrests inside the Stamford Superior Courthouse on August 11 and reports of enforcement actions in the South End and West Side. We know these incidents have intensified fear and uncertainty for many in our community. It is important for residents to know that their safety and the trust between our community and local law enforcement remain our top priority.

The City of Stamford is a welcoming and inclusive community, and the recent activity by ICE officials does not align with our commitment to ensuring that all residents are treated with dignity and respect—regardless of immigration status or background. Consistent with state law, the Stamford Police Department operates in full compliance with the Connecticut Trust Act, which defines and limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration officials. The Stamford Police Department does not assist ICE, except in cases involving serious crimes.

We want to underscore that because of these protections, all residents—regardless of immigration status—should feel safe contacting law enforcement and reporting crimes when they need help. When residents feel safe coming forward, it protects not only individuals who are victims of crime but also helps strengthen the safety of our city. This trust is essential to public safety, and we will continue to maintain it to ensure the well-being of all residents.

In partnership with state and community partners, we are committed to protecting our community and providing residents with educational resources to ensure they know their rights and how to stay safe.”

Hoy, la alcaldesa Caroline Simmons y el jefe de policía de Stamford, Timothy Shaw, han publicado la siguiente declaración sobre la reciente actividad de ICE en la Ciudad de Stamford:

“En las últimas semanas, la Ciudad de Stamford ha visto un aumento en la actividad de ICE, con arrestos dentro del Tribunal Superior de Stamford el 11 de agosto e informes de acciones policiales en South End y West Side. Sabemos que estos incidentes han intensificado el miedo y la incertidumbre para muchos en nuestra comunidad. Es importante que los residentes sepan que su seguridad y la confianza entre nuestra comunidad y las fuerzas del orden locales siguen siendo nuestra máxima prioridad.

La Ciudad de Stamford es una comunidad que acoge e integra a todos, y las recientes actividades de los funcionarios de ICE no se alinean con nuestro compromiso de garantizar que todos los residentes sean tratados con dignidad y respeto, independientemente de su estatus migratorio o antecedentes. De conformidad con la ley estatal, el Departamento de Policía de Stamford opera en pleno cumplimiento de la Ley de Confiabilidad de Connecticut, que define y limita la cooperación entre las fuerzas del orden locales y los funcionarios federales de inmigración.
