Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

 

Read below to learn more about initiatives my administration is working on, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

 

MAYOR’S UPDATES 

  • Greenwich Ave/Pulaski St Roundabout Opens: On Monday, we celebrated the ribbon-cutting for the new Greenwich Ave/Pulaski St roundabout! This milestone in the Greenwich Avenue Corridor Improvement Projects will help reduce congestion in the Waterside neighborhood and continue to in pedestrian safety, cyclist mobility, and accessibility for all.

  • Landing on Earth Mural Celebration: It was wonderful to join Corners Community co-founder Maya Donald, along with students, teachers, and parents from Hart School, to celebrate the completion of the "Landing on Earth" mural at Hart Magnet. This project was made possible by funding from our Community Micro Grant program.

  • Turn of River Fire Department: Last week, I visited the Turn of River Fire Department to highlight the Stamford Fire Department's recent reorganization which included adding a second Incident Commander for the northern district. This initiative is resulting in faster response times, improved coverage, and better incident management, particularly during high-risk situations. Check out this clip to learn more.

     

  • UConn Flex Farm Visit: This week, I visited UConn's Flex Farm, an innovative initiative providing fresh produce for students through its food pantry. The items grown will be stored in a refrigerator partially funded by the 2024 Community Micro-Grant. It's great to see this project supporting student well-being!

  • Longford’s Ice Cream Visit: Yesterday, my team and I had a great time visiting Longford’s Ice Cream, made right here in Stamford! Serving around 3 million scoops a year, we're proud to have them as part of our community.

CITY NEWS

  • Welcoming Michael Douglas to Stamford: This week, it was an honor to welcome legendary actor Michael Douglas to the City of Stamford as he was celebrated at the Avon Theatre’s Lifetime Achievement Award Gala.

  • 2024 Leaf Pick Up: Leaf Pick Up will begin on November 12th, 2024. See below for your neighborhood’s deadline for leaving leaves outside!
    • North (Above Merritt Parkway): November 12, 2024
    • Middle (Merritt Parkway to I-95): November 19, 2024
    • South (South of I-95): December 3, 2024

  • Stamford Arts & Culture Commission Announces New Mural Project: The Stamford Arts & Culture Commission (SACC) has received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant to create a mural at the new Stamford Transportation Center parking garage on North State Street. SACC is seeking artists to design and paint a mural showcasing Stamford’s landmarks and culture, including its parks, waterfront, beaches, and downtown scenes. Join the community input session on Wednesday, October 30, at 6:00 pm at The Palace Theatre to share your ideas and help shape this project. For more details and the RFP, click here.
  • 2025 Arts and Culture Grant: The 2025 Arts and Culture Grant is now accepting applications. The deadline to apply is November 8th, 2024, at 11:59 pm. For more information and to apply, visit here.
  • October Arts & Culture Guide: The City of Stamford and the Stamford Arts and Culture Commission are excited to announce, “Stamford Spotlight: A Celebration of Arts and Culture.” This guide highlights upcoming arts and cultural events in Stamford. Be sure to stop by and support our local organizations! Click here to view the October Guide.
  • Shop Local Fall Guide: We are excited to launch the City of Stamford's Fall Shop Local Guide! We encourage residents to use the guide during the fall season to shop locally and support small businesses. To see the list click here. Interested in being in our next Shop Local?   • Parking Garage Demolition: The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has initiated the demolition of the Stamford Transportation Center's 1985 Parking Garage and Pedestrian Bridge. For further details, click here.
  • Stamford 2035: The City of Stamford is excited to launch the Stamford 2035 Comprehensive Plan, a once-in-a-decade opportunity to assess the city's current state and explore key questions about our future! This plan will guide Stamford’s development through 2035, focusing on crucial topics like sustainability, resilience, diversity, equity, inclusion, housing, economic growth, mobility, and infrastructure. Throughout the 10-month process, you’ll have the chance to share your vision for Stamford by participating in public meetings, workshops, surveys, and discussions with our planning team.   • Paving Update: Click here for the priority list for paving operations established in response to a city-wide road assessment in 2022.
  • Stamford Transportation Center Master Plan: Our administration has been meeting with the Connecticut Department of Transportation and city transportation officials to continue to make progress on the Stamford Train Station Master Plan. CITY EVENTS

  • Diwali Celebration: Thursday, October 31st, 2024, from 11:30am to 12:30pm at the Community Room at the Stamford Police Department (725 Bedford Street).

  • Stamford 2035 Open House: Welcome to the Stamford 2035 Comprehensive Plan on Saturday, November 16, 2-4pm at the Ferguson Library. Help shape Stamford's future! Register here and join us for Stamford 2035 Comprehensive Plan's first open house to learn about the comprehensive planning process, investigate the state of the city, and share your vision for Stamford in 2035. Parents bring your kids for an adjoining youth workshop. Light refreshments will be served. Find more information here and on our website.
  • The Stamford Veteran Day Parade: Residents are invited to the annual Veterans Day Parade & Ceremony on Sunday, November 10, 2024.  This year's Grand Marshal will be US Army veteran, Genie Camacho. The parade steps off at 12:00 pm and will travel the following route: Starting at the Stamford Police Department and will end at Veterans Memorial Park. There will be a ceremony immediately following the parade in Veterans Memorial Park (130 Atlantic Street). The parade & ceremony will also be live streamed by LocalLive (link will be shared closer to the day of the parade in November). Employment Opportunities in the City

  • Mill Road Bridge: The Mill Road bridge near Old Long Ridge Road is open to one lane vehicular traffic.  Residents can click here for updates.
  • Lakeside Drive Bridge Replacement: Lakeside Drive Bridge is closed to all traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians. Residents are reminded to please stay away from the construction site for your own safety. There is only access to the Aquarion Water treatment plant provided pass Quarry Road. For detour plans and more information click here.
  • Cedar Heights Bridge Replacement: The Cedar Heights Bridge is currently closed, and residents are encouraged to check here for more information.
  • West Glen Drive Bridge: West Glen Bridge is currently closed for replacement, and the anticipated completion date is 12/1/2024
  • Hunting Ridge Road Bridge Replacement: The Hunting Ridge Road Bridge is currently closed for replacement. A detour route is in effect until June 2025 with the scheduled project completion is June 2025. More information can be found here.
  • Connecticut Department of Transportation Stamford Station Construction: Construction continues at the Stamford Train Station, so please make sure to plan ahead. Passengers can find the updated train schedule here.
